Overseas trained teachers

Surrey welcomes overseas trained teachers and recognises the important contribution they make.

Schools are provided with a handbook, 'Overseas trained teachers - guidance and support', which contains information for the OTT, their mentor and supporting school, with advice on gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

OTTs seeking a post should apply directly to Surrey schools advertising vacancies on this website. Teachers from the EEA may have their qualifications recognised by the General Teaching Council England - visit their website www.gtce.org.uk/registration .

Teachers from non-EEA countries should start by checking the equivalence of their degree and teacher training qualification with NARIC - National Academic Recognition Information Centre, www.naric.org.uk .

A very good up-to-date source of information for OTTs can be found on the TDA website www.tda.gov.uk/partners/recruiting/ebr/ottprog in England. This also provides guidance on gaining QTS, together with lists of useful publications and sources of information on immigration, criminal record checks and other issues.

For specific individual advice, OTTs and schools should also contact the workforce development team at wd@vtplc.com .

Surrey County Council, on behalf of Surrey maintained schools, is a licensed sponsor for Tier 2 (general) skilled worker immigration status.  For more information about immigration and working in the UK, visit the UK Border Agency website on www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk .
