Surrey's total budget for Schools and Learning was £643 million in 2008/09 and its schools' budget was £554 million. Educational establishments include: 4 nursery schools, 312 primary schools, 53 secondary schools, 23 special schools and 14 pupil referral units. Over 140,000 pupils attend the maintained schools and almost 7,700 teachers (including headteachers and deputy headteachers) are employed within the schools.
The percentage of adults with higher education qualifications is well above average, with more than half having 2 'A' Levels or equivalent and just over a third possessing a degree or equivalent qualification.
