About Us

Helston Community College, in Cornwall, was recognised by OFSTED in November 2013 as a "Good School" (with outstanding behaviour). It is a secondary comprehensive school catering for boys and girls, of all abilities between the ages of 11 and 19 who live mainly in an approximate 10 mile radius of Helston Town. There are 1585 students between the ages of 11 and 19, including 402 in the Sixth Form.

The College is a Foundation
Co-operative Trust. The Trust comprises The College, The Diocese of Truro (representing Churches Together in Helston), University College Falmouth, Cornwall College, Truro College, Careers South West and Cornwall Council. It supports the school in offering the students the greatest range of opportunities particularly at age 14 -19.

The College, which has 113 teachers and part-time lecturers or instructors, is supported by over 116 clerical, technical, teaching assistants, sports coaches, caretaking, cleaning and catering staff. The College runs its own catering and cleaning services and these are provided at a very high standard. Instrumental Music Tuition is provided by Cornwall Learning through the Helston Community College Music and Performing Arts Academy. This builds on the outstanding music provision which the College has developed over many years.

The College Campus is located on three sites within easy walking distance of each other. The South site, which was the Helston Grammar School now houses the Faculties of Cultural Studies and Visual and Performing Arts. It is also the Tutor base for the new year 7 students and where the Learning Development Team has its Centre.

The North site, which was the Gwealhellis Secondary School, houses the Faculty of Mathematics, Information Technology and Business, The Faculty of Science and Physical Education, The English Faculty and The Faculty of Technology and Applied Learning. There are highly specialised facilities on this site including a “state of the art” Modern Languages Centre, a high quality Technology and Manufacturing Suite, fitted with industry standard, computer guided laser cutters and access to the very latest computer software design programmes.

Information Technology is very well resourced in the College with eight designated computer rooms, together with smaller computer outlets throughout the College giving access to excellent information processing facilities. These are supplemented by other equipment including satellite dishes which geographers use to study world weather and enable language students to sample European TV or radio programmes. Teaching is greatly enhanced across the whole College through the use of computer-linked, interactive whiteboards in the majority of classrooms and every classroom has a computer and digital projector.

Also on the North site the College has a wide range of Sports Facilities, which include Sports Hall, a Gymnasium, two fitness suites, an All Weather Multi Use Games Area and a Swimming Pool. This is housed in the Helston Sport and Leisure Centre which shares our campus and with whom we have close links. All the students are encouraged to make as much use as possible of these facilities during the College day and when formal lessons end. There is a wide range of sports activities available.

The College has invested heavily in the provision of vocational courses, and we have created specialist facilities for Building Construction, Motor Vehicle Engineering, Horticulture and Small Animal Care, Hair and Beauty and Child Development which includes a Day Nursery.

The Sixth Form students have a seperate social base. The wide range of extra curricular and community activities provided adds considerably to the quality of life in the College and to that of the town.
